Air Pollution Accelerates Kidney Function Decline: Urgent Public Health Concern
5 Aug 2025 • Analyzing 870,000 participants reveals a strong link between air pollution and accelerated chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression.
Key Findings:
- Among 61,239 cases with ≥30% estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline and 23,330 with ≥40% decline, particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO) had the greatest impact.
- Each interquartile range increase in CO nearly tripled the odds of ≥30% eGFR decline (aOR 2.78) and significantly raised risk for ≥40% decline. Associations were strongest with 1- and 2-year exposures.
The findings identify air pollution as a major, modifiable risk factor for kidney damage, highlighting an urgent need for public health action.
