Diabetic Retinopathy Progression Patterns Differ Beyond Severity Levels
8 Oct 2025 • In a large cohort of 41,977 eyes screened for diabetic retinopathy (DR) from 1999–2016, 9.6% showed ≥2-step DR worsening over five years, with the highest progression among those with moderate-to-severe non-proliferative DR (36.5%).
Overall, 1.24% developed clinically significant macular edema (CSME), 0.49% progressed to proliferative DR (PDR), and 0.10% advanced to both.
These progression patterns were independent of baseline DR severity, indicating that factors beyond initial disease grade drive risk and highlighting the need for personalized monitoring in diabetic eye care.
