Liver Fibrosis Tied to Higher Heart and Kidney Risk in Type 2 Diabetes

30 Sept 2025 • In a study of 2,436 patients with type 2 diabetes, advanced liver fibrosis—measured by the NAFLD Fibrosis Score—was independently associated with higher risks of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Key Findings:

  • Patients with advanced fibrosis showed a 45% increased risk of LVH (OR 1.45) and nearly double the risk of CKD (OR 1.94), even after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors.
  • These associations were consistent across BMI and lipid profiles, and fibrosis severity paralleled progression in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) staging.

Findings highlight the importance of integrating MASLD and fibrosis into CKM staging to improve risk stratification in T2DM care.
