Bladder Cancer Risk Soars in Type 1 Diabetes—Independent of Smoking
30 Oct 2025 • A new meta-analysis has identified type 1 diabetes as a potential risk factor for bladder cancer. After adjusting for the confounding effect of smoking—a major risk factor—the pooled analysis of nine studies showed a four-fold higher risk of bladder cancer in individuals with type 1 diabetes (estimate 4.29).
The findings suggest that earlier studies may have masked this association by not accounting for smoking. Clinicians should maintain vigilance for urologic malignancies in patients with type 1 diabetes.
