Midlife Hypertension Strongly Predicts Dementia Risk, Especially Vascular Dementia in Women
10 Sept 2025 • In a cohort of over 1.36 million women followed for 21 years, midlife hypertension was strongly linked to dementia risk.
Key Findings:
- Among 84,729 dementia cases, women with midlife hypertension had a 17% higher risk of overall dementia (HR 1.17), driven mainly by vascular dementia (HR 1.50), while no significant association was seen with Alzheimer’s disease (HR 1.01).
- By contrast, pregnancy-related hypertension showed only a weak association with dementia (HR 1.04).
These findings highlight midlife hypertension as a major contributor to late-life dementia through vascular pathways, underscoring the importance of early prevention and blood pressure control.
