Vitiligo and Melasma Exhibit Bidirectional Risk: Evidence from a Large Population Study
7 Jul 2025 • A population-based study of over 143,000 individuals revealed a significant bidirectional link between vitiligo and melasma.
Vitiligo patients had a 60% higher risk of developing melasma (1.38 vs. 0.88 per 1,000 person-years; adjusted HR = 1.58), while those with melasma had a 30% increased risk of vitiligo (adjusted OR = 1.32).
The findings suggest shared pathophysiologic pathways and support a more integrated approach to diagnosing and managing pigmentary disorders.
