Blood Thinners Triple the Risk of Bleeding After Thyroid Surgery
23 Apr 2025 • New research highlights a significantly elevated risk of postoperative hematoma (POH) requiring reoperation in thyroidectomy patients taking antithrombotic therapy.
Among 6% of patients developing POH, 0.1% required surgical intervention, 83% of which occurred within 24 hours. Patients on antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs faced a 3.54-fold and 5.2-fold higher risk of POH, respectively.
The findings underscore the need for heightened vigilance and tailored perioperative planning in patients on blood thinners undergoing thyroid surgery.
