The Dual Impact of Comorbidities on Pediatric OSA Severity and Surgery
14 May 2025 • Recent research in children (aged 6-10) with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) found that comorbidities such as chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal septum deviation, malocclusion, Grade 3 tonsillar/adenoid hypertrophy, and overweight/obesity independently heightened OSA severity.
A dose-response relationship showed that children with multiple comorbidities had up to 9 times higher odds of severe OSA (OR 9.39).
While tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy improved ventilation, comorbidities reduced the surgical benefits, emphasizing the need for comprehensive treatment approaches.
