Cardiometabolic Multimorbidity Doubles Dementia Risk—Women and Younger Adults at Greater Risk
9 Jul 2025 • A study of 287,748 individuals shows cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) (diabetes, heart disease, stroke) significantly increase dementia risk.
Key Findings:
- Those with multiple CMDs had more than double the risk of all-cause dementia (HR: 2.27), a 49% higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease (HR: 1.49), and nearly fourfold increased risk of vascular dementia (HR: 3.70).
- Risks were highest in women and under-60s.
- Glucose (9.2%), HbA1c (11.9%), and inflammation (2.4%) partially mediated this link, suggesting metabolic/inflammatory pathways.
Findings underscore the urgent need for early prevention in high-risk groups with CMDs.
