Prior GDM Tied to Higher Maternal-Neonatal Risks Even Without Recurrence
10 Jul 2025 • A study of nearly 20,000 births found that women with prior gestational diabetes (GDM), even if not diagnosed in a later pregnancy, face elevated risks of adverse outcomes.
Key Findings:
- Compared to women without GDM, these women had higher rates of macrosomia (OR 1.4), large-for-gestational-age infants (OR 1.6), and preeclampsia (OR 2.35).
- Their risk for composite maternal-neonatal complications remained elevated (adjusted OR 1.30), similar to those with GDM in both pregnancies (OR 1.75).
The findings suggest persistent metabolic risk, calling for closer monitoring even in GDM-free pregnancies.
