Low Postpartum Hemoglobin Linked to Higher Depression Risk
16 Jul 2025 • Postpartum anemia (Hb <11 g/dL) is linked to higher depression risk. In 2,672 women, 43.6% had anemia, and 13.8% developed postpartum depression (PPD) (EPDS score ≥11).
Each 1 g/dL Hb increase reduced PPD risk by 9% (aRR 0.91), with stronger protection against moderate symptoms (aRR 0.84).
Findings suggest postpartum Hb is a modifiable factor for maternal mental health.
