ICMR Study Finds Just 2% of Obese Indians Are Metabolically Healthy
1 Jul 2025 • A large national survey from the ICMR-INDIAB study revealed that 43.3% of the Indian adults are metabolically obese but non-obese (MONO), a high-risk phenotype more commonly seen in rural areas (46% vs. 39.6% in urban areas) and associated with higher chronic kidney disease risk, particularly in women.
Metabolically Obese Obese (MOO) was seen in 28.3%, Metabolically Healthy Non-Obese in 26.6%, while only 1.8% were Metabolically Healthy Obese.
MOO individuals showed the highest risk of type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease.
The study emphasizes a paradigm shift away from BMI-based risk screening toward broader metabolic assessments to curb non-communicable diseases in India.
