EEG-Guided Anesthesia Cuts Delirium Risk and Speeds Recovery in Young Children

22 Apr 2025 • Electroencephalography (EEG)-guided anesthesia significantly reduces the risk of pediatric anesthesia emergence delirium (PAED) by minimizing exposure to sevoflurane.

Among the children aged 1 to under 6 years, PAED occurred in only 21% of those receiving EEG-guided titration compared to 35% in the standard care group—a 14% absolute reduction.

EEG monitoring also led to 1.4 fewer minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) hours of sevoflurane exposure and facilitated faster recovery, with children waking 21.4 minutes earlier and spending 16.5 minutes less in the post-anesthesia care unit.
