Metabolic Syndrome Identified as Key Risk Factor for HoLEP Complications
27 Jan 2025 • Patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) face over three times the risk of complications after undergoing holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
A retrospective analysis of 1,500 patients showed that those with MetS—defined as the presence of diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²)—had significantly higher odds of developing complications like urinary incontinence, irritative voiding symptoms, and bleeding within 30- and 90-days post-surgery. Adjusted odds ratios were 3.32 at 30 days and 3.64 at 90 days.
These findings highlight the importance of considering MetS during preoperative assessments and counselling, as this condition can substantially impact surgical outcomes and recovery.
