Ankyloglossia Associated with Increased Risk and Earlier Onset of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Children

27 Jun 2025 • Children diagnosed with ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) face a significantly increased and earlier risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Key Findings:

  • Researchers observed that 6.1% of children with ankyloglossia developed OSA compared to 4.0% without, translating to a 53% higher relative risk (RR: 1.53).
  • Affected children were also diagnosed with OSA at a younger age (median: 1,525 vs. 1,877 days).

The findings underscore ankyloglossia as a potential early risk marker for pediatric OSA and call for prospective studies to clarify the role of surgical intervention.
