GLP-1 Receptor Agonists Reduce Intracerebral Hemorrhage Risk in Type 2 Diabetes

6 Jun 2025 • A large real-world study of over 1.2 million type 2 diabetes patients found GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) linked to a 26% lower risk of nontraumatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) (HR 0.743) after propensity score matching of 255,460 users versus non-users.

The risk reduction was consistent across all hemorrhage sites. GLP-1RA use also significantly reduced all-cause mortality (HR 0.525) and ischemic stroke risk (HR 0.871).

These results highlight a promising cerebrovascular protective effect of GLP-1RAs, likely related to their antihypertensive and anti-inflammatory properties.
