Interstitial Lung Disease Independently Doubles Lung Cancer Risk Across All Histological Subtypes
11 Jul 2025 • In an analysis of over 5.4 million people, interstitial lung disease (ILD) was linked to a markedly higher lung cancer risk—HR 2.16 overall and HR 2.91 in sibling-controlled analyses.
Key Findings:
- Risk spanned all major subtypes: small cell (HR 3.29), squamous cell (HR 2.56), and adenocarcinoma (HR 1.60).
- Lung cancer incidence in ILD patients was 355.4 per 100,000 person-years vs. 26.2 in the general population.
Findings support integrating ILD into lung cancer risk models and emphasize close monitoring of affected individuals.
