Trial Confirms Safety of Filtered Sunlight Phototherapy in Jaundiced Newborns
1 Jul 2025 • Filtered-sunlight phototherapy (FSPT) proved safe and non-inferior to intensive electric phototherapy (IEPT) in managing newborns with moderate-to-severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, according to a recent randomized trial.
FSPT demonstrated 93.4% efficacy—comparable to IEPT (93.3%)—with no major safety concerns, including hyperthermia, dehydration, sunburn, or deaths.
Although night-time phototherapy was required more often with FSPT, the need for exchange transfusion rates was similarly low across both groups.
Researchers suggest FSPT could be a viable option in resource-limited settings lacking reliable electric phototherapy.
