Surgery Proves More Effective for Older Adults with Acute Cholecystitis & Multimorbidity

18 Apr 2025 • A large-scale study comparing operative and nonoperative treatments for acute cholecystitis in older adults (72-85 years) with multimorbidity found that surgery yields better clinical outcomes.

Among over 32,000 patients, those who underwent cholecystectomy had a 3% lower 30-day mortality and 4% lower 90-day mortality risk.

Even in cases with clinical uncertainty, surgery reduced readmissions (by 15% at 30 days and 23% at 90 days) and ED revisits (by 9% and 12%, respectively). These findings support operative management in geriatric patients.
