DBT Outperforms Mammography in Breast Cancer Screening for Women with Family History

23 May 2025 • A study compared digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) with digital mammography (DM) in over 200,000 women with a family history of breast cancer.

DBT reduced recall rates by 1.51% and enhanced specificity by 1.56%, lowering unnecessary follow-ups. The benefits were more pronounced in women with one first-degree relative affected and with scattered fibroglandular breast density.

Among those with extremely dense breasts, DBT also cut advanced cancer detection rates by 0.61 per 1,000 exams. While biopsy rates rose slightly in some subgroups, DBT identified a higher proportion of early-stage cancers with favorable prognoses.

These findings support DBT as a more precise screening tool in higher-risk women, enhancing early detection while minimizing false positives.
