New Evidence Connects NAION With Greater Incidence of Ischemic Stroke

30 May 2025 • A large study revealed that patient with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) face significantly higher risks of ischemic stroke.

Compared to matched controls, NAION patients showed increased incidence of large-vessel stroke at 18.7% versus 14.7% and small-vessel stroke at 4.8% versus 3.1%, with hazard ratios of 1.5 and 1.56, respectively.

Carotid artery stenosis (CAS) was more common in NAION cases, amplifying stroke risk even without other vascular factors.

These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted monitoring and management of NAION patients, especially those with CAS, to prevent subsequent strokes.
