Latent Iron Deficiency at Birth Doubles Risk of Infant Iron Deficiency
13 Jun 2025 • A southern India cohort study found that infants with latent iron deficiency at birth (ferritin 11–75 ng/mL) had a 48.5% risk of iron deficiency at 6 months, compared to 24.7% in those with normal ferritin levels (>75 ng/mL) (RR = 2.3).
Mean hemoglobin was also lower in the latent iron deficiency group (10.21 vs. 10.48 g/dL).
With an overall deficiency rate of 27.6%, the study highlights cord ferritin as a valuable early screening tool for targeted intervention.
