Bidirectional Link Between Hyperemesis Gravidarum and Depression Identified

17 Oct 2025 • A study of 437,465 women with live births (2005–2017) revealed a strong bidirectional link between hyperemesis gravidarum and depression.

Key Findings:

  • Among 4,265 women with hyperemesis, 8.8% had pre-pregnancy depression versus 1.0% of 302,663 controls (AOR 5.2).
  • Post-pregnancy depression was also more common (4.9% vs 1.0%; AOR 3.6) and occurred earlier (3.3 vs 4.5 years postpartum), with most cases developing over a year after delivery.

The findings suggest shared biological pathways between severe pregnancy nausea and depression, emphasizing the need for early psychiatric screening and multidisciplinary care in affected women.
