Microbiologically Confirmed UTIs Raise Risk of MI or Stroke Within a Week
1 Jul 2025 • New research showed that the risk of acute myocardial infarction and stroke rises significantly during the first 7 days after a microbiologically confirmed urinary tract infection (UTI).
Among over 51,000 MI and 58,000 stroke cases, the incidence rate of myocardial infarction increased 2.5 times (IRR 2.49), while the stroke risk doubled (IRR 2.34) within a week of infection.
These findings suggest UTIs may act as acute cardiovascular triggers, underscoring the need for timely intervention and monitoring in affected patients.
