Amniocentesis-Guided Antibiotic Strategy Cuts Exposure in Early PPROM Without Compromising Outcomes
12 Jun 2025 • In a 10-year study, using amniocentesis-guided antibiotic therapy in preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) before 32 weeks significantly reduced maternal and neonatal antibiotic use.
Key Findings:
- Post-2019 protocol patients had shorter maternal antibiotic courses (median 2 vs. 5 days), shorter hospital stays (5 vs. 11 days), and higher outpatient management rates (68% vs. 47%).
- Neonatal antibiotic use at birth dropped markedly (OR 0.31).
These results endorse targeted antibiotic strategies to safely minimize overtreatment and healthcare burden.
