Liberal vs Restrictive Transfusion Strategies in Myocardial Infarction with Anemia
4 Jun 2025 • According to a large study, Liberal transfusion (Hb <10 g/dL) showed no quality-of-life (QOL) benefit over a restrictive strategy (Hb 7-8 g/dL) in 2,844 myocardial infarction (MI) patients with anemia.
At 30 days, both groups had similar QOL scores (no significant differences in mobility, activities, or self-care). Heart failure patients had modest functional improvement with liberal transfusion, but the results weren't statistically significant.
Findings challenge routine liberal transfusion for QOL benefits in MI, highlighting the need for individualized care, especially in heart failure.
