Cervical Artery Dissection Risk Elevated after Migraine Diagnosis
15 Jul 2025 • In a large US-based study involving over 495,000 patients, new-onset migraine—both with aura and without aura—was strongly associated with an elevated risk of developing cervical artery dissection (CeAD) within two years.
Compared to matched non-migraine controls, the incidence of CeAD was nearly six times higher in patients with migraine with aura (0.095% vs. 0.016%, RR 5.91) and over three times higher in those without aura (0.058% vs. 0.016%, RR 3.60).
The findings highlight the need for increased vascular vigilance following a migraine diagnosis, regardless of aura status.
