Low Thyroid Hormone in Pregnancy Tied to Alarming Rise in Gestational Diabetes Risk

29 Apr 2025 • Among 2,741 pregnant women studied, those with persistent isolated maternal hypothyroxinemia (IMH) faced a staggering 74-fold increase in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk (adjusted OR = 73.97), with GDM incidence highest in women with IMH in both trimesters (93.01%).

Even single-trimester IMH significantly elevated GDM risk. IMH was also associated with greater insulin resistance and adverse perinatal outcomes.

These findings underscore the importance of monitoring and managing IMH during pregnancy to mitigate the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes.
