NAFLD Mediates the Association Between Insulin Resistance and Myocardial Ischemia
6 Jun 2025 • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been identified as the key link between insulin resistance and heart risk.
Key Findings:
- Among patients with suspected coronary artery disease undergoing myocardial perfusion imaging, 53.4% showed myocardial ischemia.
- A one standard deviation rise in the metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR) was linked to nearly fourfold higher odds of ischemia (OR 3.92).
- NAFLD fully mediated this relationship, indicating that insulin resistance impacts cardiac perfusion entirely through fatty liver.
These results highlight the urgent need to screen and manage NAFLD to prevent cardiovascular complications.
