Early-Onset Cancer Risk Elevated in Young Adults with Steatotic Liver Disease

9 May 2025 • Young adults with steatotic liver disease face a heightened risk of early-onset cancer, according to a large Korean study.

Over a decade of follow-up, cancer risk was 19% higher in those with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), 12% higher in metabolic and alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD), and 21% higher in alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) compared to those without steatotic liver disease.

Obesity-related cancers were especially prevalent in MASLD and MetALD, with risk rising alongside cardiometabolic burden. Alcohol had a modest effect on overall cancer risk but varied by cancer type.

These findings highlight the importance of monitoring liver health and cardiometabolic factors to reduce cancer risk in young adults.
