Unmasking Asthma Triggers: Indian Diet and Indoor Hazards Under the Spotlight

27 Jun 2025 • An Indian analysis from the Global Asthma Network Phase I study highlights key asthma triggers unique to the region.

Key Findings:

  • Genetic factors like parental asthma (AOR 2.88 in adults) and environmental exposures such as damp housing and biomass fuel use were significant.
  • In adolescents, certain dietary habits—regular intake of bananas (AOR 1.34), curd (AOR 1.49), ice cream (AOR 1.31), and packaged snacks (AOR 1.23)—were linked to higher odds of wheezing.
  • Additionally, mosquito repellent use (AOR 1.11 in adults) and exposure to woollen blankets during infancy (AOR 1.67 in children) emerged as notable household risk factors.

The findings call for culturally tailored interventions targeting diet and indoor exposures to reduce India’s asthma burden.
