Testosterone Replacement Therapy Linked to Significantly Higher Risk of Surgical Tendon Ruptures
30 May 2025 • A large study has revealed a striking association between testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) and surgically treated tendon ruptures.
Researchers found that 0.16% of testosterone users experienced a major tendon rupture requiring surgery, compared to just 0.02% in non-users. This translates to a 7.5-fold increased odds of tendon rupture among TRT patients (OR 7.53).
While TRT is widely used for hypogonadism, these findings raise important safety concerns, particularly for physically active individuals, warranting cautious patient selection and monitoring.
