Parental Diabetes Complications Heighten Offspring’s Risk
7 May 2025 • A Finnish study found that children with type 1 diabetes had a higher risk of developing diabetic kidney disease or severe retinopathy if their parents had the same complications.
Parental severe albuminuria increased the risk 2.4-fold, whereas kidney failure raised it to 3.0-fold. Severe diabetic retinopathy in parents heightened the child’s risk by 4.34-fold.
These findings emphasizes the critical role of family history in predicting diabetic complications.
