Heart Failure Risk in Indian Type 2 Diabetics: Key NT-proBNP Cut-off Identified
6 Jun 2025 • An Indian study found that 11.5% of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus had moderate to severely reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
Specifically, 5.9% had HF with reduced EF, 5.5% had mildly reduced EF, and 14.1% had HF with preserved EF. Elevated NT-proBNP levels correlated with reduced EF, and a cut-off of 398 pg/mL diagnosed HF with 87% sensitivity and 78% specificity.
HF prevalence increased with age, peaking at 30.6% in those aged 61–70 years.
Women with HF showed higher NT-proBNP levels than men. Early HF identification via echocardiography and NT-proBNP in diabetes clinics can improve prognosis.
