Intraoperative Cell Salvage Cuts Blood Transfusions in PAS Cesarean Deliveries

16 May 2025 • In women with placenta accreta spectrum (PAS), intraoperative cell salvage (IOCS) safely reduced the need for allogeneic blood transfusions during cesarean delivery, according to a recent study.

Patients in the IOCS group had greater blood loss (2500 mL vs. 1200 mL) but required fewer allogeneic transfusions (1 vs. 2 units) without any complications such as amniotic fluid embolism risk.

High ultrasound PAS scores and MRI-detected placental vascular abnormalities predicted transfusion needs, with high-risk patients recovering more salvaged blood. Hysterectomy rates and neonatal outcomes were comparable between groups.

The findings support IOCS as an effective blood conservation tool in PAS management, especially in high-risk cases.
