Renal Dysfunction Doubles Vertebral Fracture Risk in Older Adults with Type 2 Diabetes
11 Jun 2025 • A study in older adults with type 2 diabetes found that renal dysfunction significantly raises the risk of vertebral fractures (VFs).
Key Findings:
- Patients with either estimated glomerular filtration rate decline or proteinuria had nearly double the risk (HR = 1.98), while those with both had over 2.5 times the risk (HR = 2.53).
- Low bone CT attenuation (HU) also predicted VFs.
- Adding renal dysfunction to prediction models improved accuracy (AUC from 0.817 to 0.839).
Risk was notably higher in women and those without neuropathy, vascular disease, or insulin use.
