Shingles Vaccine Linked to Reduced Cardiovascular Events in Older Adults

8 May 2025 • A large study of over 1.2 million adults aged ≥50 found that live zoster vaccination reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease by 23% (HR 0.77) over a 6-year median follow-up.

Key Findings:

  • Significant risk reductions were seen for major adverse cardiovascular events (HR 0.74), heart failure (HR 0.74), stroke (HR 0.76), and ischemic heart disease (HR 0.78).
  • Protective effects lasted up to 8 years, peaking at 2–3 years post-vaccination, and added 95 event-free days per decade.
  • Benefits were greatest in men, those <60, and socially disadvantaged groups—highlighting the vaccine’s potential role in cardiovascular prevention.
