Hidradenitis Suppurativa Patients Face Increased Risk of Depression, Anxiety, and More
5 May 2025 • A meta-analysis has uncovered a striking connection between hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and psychiatric disorders (PD).
Key Findings:
-
Patients with HS had twice the higher risk of depression (20.9% vs. 8.35%) and nearly double the risk of anxiety (19.3% vs. 8.14%) compared to the general population.
-
Bipolar disorder (1.04% vs. 0.06%, OR 3.68), schizophrenia (2.68% vs. 1.23%, OR 2.00), and completed suicide (0.67% vs. 0.44%, OR 1.56) were also more common in HS patients.
-
Risk of depression rose with disease severity, affecting 35.3% of patients with Hurley Stage III HS.
-
Psychiatric disorders were more prevalent in females with HS (28%) than in males (21%), and adults were twice as likely as children to experience depression (19.1% vs. 9.51%).
This study underscores the need for greater awareness and proactive mental health support for HS patients to improve their overall quality of life.
