Hidden Bleeding Disorders Found in 1 in 10 Women with Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
7 Jul 2025 • In women referred for heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), nearly 10% had undiagnosed congenital bleeding disorders—mainly von Willebrand disease—with 9.2% showing factor deficiency and 0.7% having severe forms.
Anemia was common: 34.7% had hemoglobin ≤120 g/L, 42.8% had ferritin <15 μg/L, and 72.5% had levels <30 μg/L. Despite a few transfusions, 75.1% required oral iron.
These findings underscore the need for routine bleeding disorder screening in women with HMB.
