Cataract Surgery Associated with Reduced Dementia Risk in Older Adults, Particularly Alzheimer’s Disease

29 Apr 2025 • Researchers found that patients who underwent cataract surgery within a year of diagnosis had a 32% lower risk of developing dementia within five years (HR=0.677), with the strongest protective effect observed for Alzheimer’s disease (HR=0.643).

Key Findings:

  • The surgery showed no significant impact on vascular dementia (HR=0.968).
  • The cognitive benefit did not extend to patients with common mental disorders (CMD), suggesting that CMD may blunt the neuroprotective effects of cataract surgery.

These findings underscore the broader cognitive implications of vision restoration, particularly in the aging population.
