Exploring Adipokines as Early Predictors of Metabolic Syndrome in PCOS Patients
18 Apr 2025 • A new study highlights the potential of adipokines—adiponectin, leptin, and resistin—as early predictors of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Of the patients, 40.3% were found to have MetS, with the highest prevalence in those with the non-PCO (O+HA) phenotype.
Adipokine levels differed significantly between those with and without MetS (p<0.001), suggesting their role in the early metabolic disruption. While traditional markers like fasting glucose, waist circumference and triglyceride remained predictive in advanced stages, altered adipokines may offer a window for early intervention in PCOS-related metabolic risk.
