Early Fluid Overload Signals Higher Mortality Risk in Critically Ill Children

15 Apr 2025 • Analyzing children aged 1 month to 13 years, researchers found that a 24-hour cumulative fluid overload (FO) exceeding 5% was a significant predictor of mortality (AUC = 0.72), alongside elevated PRISM-III scores (AUC = 0.97).

The overall mortality rate stood at 13%, with non-survivors exhibiting markedly higher fluid accumulation and illness severity scores. Both early FO and PRISM-III were independent mortality predictors.

These findings spotlight the crucial role of vigilant fluid monitoring within the first 24 hours of Pediatric ICU admission.
