Metabolic Acidosis on Day 6 Flags Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Risk in Preterm Infants
20 Jun 2025 • New evidence spotlighted metabolic acidosis on day 6 of life as a key modifiable risk factor for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) or mortality in preterm infants.
Among those born between 23 and 31 + 6 weeks of gestation, metabolic acidosis on day 6 of life was tied to a 37% higher risk of moderate/severe BPD or mortality (OR 1.36).
Fluid intake was greater in affected infants in the first (23.4% vs. 7.3%) and second weeks (22.8% vs. 8.2%) of life.
The findings underscore the need for vigilant acid-base monitoring and fluid balance management during the early postnatal period to improve neonatal respiratory outcomes.
