Abacavir Exposure Associated with Increased Risk of MACE in People with HIV
5 Jun 2025 • In an analysis involving 7,769 people with HIV and low-to-moderate cardiovascular risk, researchers identified a significant link between abacavir exposure (antiretroviral therapy [ART]) and increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).
Participants with former or current abacavir use had a 62% and 41% higher hazard of MACE, respectively, compared to those never exposed.
These findings reinforce growing concerns about abacavir’s cardiovascular profile and underscore the need to factor in historical ART exposure, especially abacavir, when evaluating heart risk in people living with HIV.
