Supine Blood Pressure Linked to Higher Cardiovascular Risk than Seated Hypertension
23 Jan 2025 • Individuals with supine hypertension are at a higher risk for cardiovascular diseases and mortality, even if their blood pressure is normal when sitting, suggests study.
Key Findings: -Increased risks of coronary heart disease (CHD) (HR 1.60), heart failure (HR 1.83), stroke (HR 1.86), fatal coronary heart disease (HR 2.18), and all-cause mortality (HR 1.43), regardless of antihypertensive medication use or seated hypertension status. -Similar risk on having only supine hypertension or both supine and seated hypertension, and a significantly greater risk compared to having seated hypertension alone (except for fatal CHD).
This highlights the importance of incorporating supine blood pressure in routine screening for comprehensive understanding of a patient's cardiovascular health, as this could potentially lead to earlier detection and better management of at-risk individuals.
