Esophageal Cancer Risk Soars in Head and Neck Cancer Patients—Especially in Initial 2 Years
30 Apr 2025 • A study reveals that 10.1% of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients developed esophageal second primary neoplasms (ESPNs), with hypopharyngeal cancer showing the highest risk (OR 13.3).
Over half of ESPN cases emerged within 24 months of the initial HNC diagnosis. Alcohol and areca-quid consumption were significant contributors, particularly in oral cavity cancers.
These findings highlight the need for routine panendoscopy and close monitoring, particularly for hypopharyngeal cancer patients.
