Food Allergy Accelerates Atopic March in Children with Dermatitis
16 May 2025 • A large study involving over 10,000 children with atopic dermatitis (AD) has shown that food allergy (FA) in early life increased the risk of developing other atopic conditions by school-age.
Children diagnosed with both AD and FA by 36 months had significantly higher risk of anaphylaxis (aRR 1.69), moderate to severe asthma (aRR 1.42) and allergic rhinitis (aRR 1.34) between ages 5 and 11.
These children also had earlier onset of AD, required more medications and had more frequent medical visits in infancy.
The findings support the role of FA as a key accelerator in the atopic march and highlight the importance of early identification and management of FA in children with AD to potentially modify long-term outcomes.
