Pediatric Hypertension Associated with Threefold Increased Risk of Major Adverse Kidney Events
25 Jun 2025 • Children and adolescents with hypertension face a markedly increased long-term risk of major adverse kidney events (MAKEs), including chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, or death, according to a retrospective cohort study of over 26,000 hypertensive youths (aged 3–18) and nearly 127,000 matched controls.
Over a median follow-up of 14 years, the incidence of MAKEs was 5.52 vs 1.66 per 1000 person-years (7.7% vs 2.4%), corresponding to a more than threefold higher risk (HR 3.03) in those with hypertension.
Despite low baseline comorbidities, the findings highlight the urgent need for better screening and long-term management of pediatric hypertension to mitigate its overlooked renal consequences.
