Children with Down Syndrome Face Greater Risk of Autism and ADHD
25 Apr 2025 • Children with Down syndrome (DS) face a significantly higher risk of developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a large national study confirmed.
Among 214,300 children, those with DS had a 5.4-fold higher risk of ASD and a 1.7-fold increased risk of ADHD. They were also 3.45 times more likely to have both ASD and ADHD concurrently.
These associations appeared in both sexes, though the risk of autism differed by sex, underscoring the importance of tailored developmental screening in children with Down syndrome.
