Early-Life Gut and Urological Disorders May Triple Risk of Interstitial Cystitis in Adulthood

27 Jun 2025 • Analyzing over 118 million patient records has identified childhood gastrointestinal (GI) and urological anomalies (UA) as strong predictors of interstitial cystitis (IC) in adulthood.

Early-life diagnoses of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and urinary tract infections (UTIs) were associated with nearly threefold increased risks of adult IC (risk ratios: 2.9 and 3.2, respectively).

The study also revealed marked gender disparities, with adolescent females showing higher rates of UA, autoimmune conditions, and multiple comorbidities.

These findings highlight the multifactorial nature of IC and the importance of early detection and intervention to reduce its long-term impact.
